Why water infrastructure belongs in microgrid planning

Pumps, controls, treatment, communications, and building water systems can all fail when electricity is unavailable. A microgrid that serves only conventional building loads may miss the service that most directly protects health or reduces flood damage.

Start from critical services

Resilience planning should define which water and energy services must survive, for how long, under what hazard, and with which operators available.

  • Identify critical pumps, valves, sensors, treatment stages, communications, and fuel dependencies.
  • Model startup current and power quality—not only average kilowatts.
  • Coordinate electrical islanding with water-system operating procedures.
  • Test black-start, manual fallback, and communications during realistic exercises.

A project is more than generation

Distributed generation helps only when switchgear, protection, controls, distribution circuits, loads, staff, and maintenance can operate together through the event. Water resilience is therefore an operational capability, not a solar-plus-battery equipment list.
